Question words: what, where, when, who, why, how and whose

Question words go at the start of a question and ask for information. 'What' asks about things and actions (What do you do at the weekend?), 'where' about places, 'when' about time, 'who' about people, and 'why' about reasons (the answer often starts with 'because'). 'How' asks about the way you do something (How do you go to school? — By bus), and it combines with other words: how old (age), how many (number), how much (price or quantity). 'What time' asks for the exact time, and 'whose' asks who something belongs to (Whose bag is this?). After the question word, use the normal question order: question word + do/does/is/are/can + subject. A common mistake is 'How is your name?'; in English it's 'What is your name?'. Another is 'How many years do you have?'; say 'How old are you?'.

  1. is your name? — My name is Laura.

  2. do you live? — In Valencia.

  3. is that man? — He's my English teacher.

  4. is your birthday? — It's in May.

  5. old is your brother? — He's ten.

  6. are you sad? — Because I can't find my phone.

  7. do you do at the weekend? — I play football with my friends.

  8. do you go to school? — By bus.

  9. time does the train leave? — At 6:15.

  10. many brothers and sisters do you have? — Two sisters.

  11. much is this T-shirt? — It's twelve euros.

  12. bag is this? — It's Maria's.
