There Is / There Are Exercises (A1) — Free

There is and there are: saying that something exists or is in a place

Use 'there is' to say that one thing exists or is in a place (There is a park near my house), and 'there are' for two or more things (There are three bedrooms in our flat). Uncountable nouns like water, milk or money also take 'there is' (There is some water on the floor). In speaking we usually say 'there's'. For negatives, use there isn't or there aren't, often with 'any' (There aren't any shops). For questions, put is or are first: Is there a bank near here? Are there any eggs? Short answers are Yes, there is / No, there isn't, and Yes, there are / No, there aren't. A common mistake is to say 'It has a park' or 'Have a park near my house' to mean that a park exists; in English we say 'There is a park'.
