Mixed conditionals: past causes with present results, and present facts with past results

Mixed conditionals combine two different times in one unreal sentence. The most common type joins an unreal past condition to a present result: if + past perfect, would + base form (If I had studied medicine, I would be a doctor now). The other type joins a present or permanent situation to a past result: if + past simple, would have + past participle (If I weren't afraid of flying, I would have gone to Japan last summer). To choose the forms, look at each clause separately: what time does the condition refer to, and what time does the result refer to? Time expressions like 'now', 'today', 'yesterday' or 'last year' are your best clues. 'Would' never goes in the if-clause: 'If I would have known' is a very common mistake. With 'be' in the present unreal condition, 'were' is standard for all persons, and 'was' is accepted in informal English. In this exercise, write the verb in brackets in the correct form; use 'would' in the result clause unless the sentence suggests otherwise.

  1. If I had studied medicine, I (be) a doctor now.

  2. If she (not/miss) the train this morning, she would be here by now.

  3. We (not/be) lost now if you had listened to me.

  4. I can't drive. If I (know) how to drive, I would have picked you up from the airport last night.

  5. If the company (invest) in new technology ten years ago, it would be more competitive today.

  6. If I weren't so afraid of flying, I (go) to Japan with you last summer.

  7. He's always so chaotic. If he (be) more organised, he wouldn't have missed the deadline yesterday.

  8. She's fluent in French. If she (not/speak) French, she wouldn't have got the job in Paris last year.

  9. If I hadn't eaten so much at lunch, I (not/feel) so sick now.

  10. you (still/live) in London now if you hadn't met Tom?

  11. Had I accepted that job in Berlin, I (live) in Germany now.

  12. If I weren't so busy these days, I (not/ask) you for help yesterday.
